Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has called on Edo State voters to reject the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming gubernatorial election, warning that a vote for the APC would be a vote for continued suffering and hardship. Atiku, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, made these remarks in a Facebook post titled “The clear choice for a prosperous Edo State.”
Atiku accused the APC of plunging Nigeria into economic turmoil, citing rising fuel prices and widespread poverty under the party’s leadership. “They criticized past leaders for raising fuel prices, yet today, they preside over an era where fuel costs soar above N900 per litre,” Atiku stated. He further described the APC’s governance as “cruel” and “indifferent to the plight of the masses,” adding, “A vote for the APC is a vote for the continuation of misery, hunger, and despair.”
He emphasized the need for Edo voters to reflect on whether the APC had improved their quality of life or worsened it, urging them to reject the party’s “empty promises.” Atiku said, “The APC has not served the people; they have served themselves. Under their watch, Nigeria has been plunged into an abyss of suffering. They have sown seeds of poverty, despair, and insecurity.”
Atiku endorsed PDP candidate Dr. Asue Ighodalo, presenting him as a leader committed to the welfare of the people. He argued that voting for Ighodalo was not just a choice for change, but “an act of reclaiming our future” and a chance to consolidate the good work of Governor Godwin Obaseki. “Your vote for Ighodalo will not only bring change to Edo State but will also send a resounding message across Nigeria that we reject the deceit and self-serving ways of the APC,” he added.
In his address, Atiku also warned voters about the deceptive tactics of the APC, claiming that the party presents itself as a friend to the masses but is driven by a hunger for power. “They have lured gullible voters with sweet promises, only to reveal their true nature—a party driven by selfish ambitions rather than the well-being of the people,” he said. He urged voters to use their power wisely at the polls, stating, “As you go to the polls, ask yourself: Has the APC made your life better, or has it only deepened your struggles?”
Atiku concluded his message with a rallying call for Edo State residents to unite for change, saying, “Let us march to the polls this Saturday, united in our resolve to bring about the change we so desperately need. Let us cast our votes for Asue Ighodalo and usher in a new dawn for Edo State. The power is yours. Use it wisely.”
