Bayelsa State Pauses to Honour a Legacy: A Heart-Stirring Day of Tribute for Late Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo

In a deeply moving display of reverence and solidarity, Bayelsa State paused today to celebrate and reflect on the life of the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, whose sudden death last December sent shockwaves across the political landscape.

Held at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa, the Day of Tribute was part of a broader four-day funeral programme that began with spirited sporting contests—unusual for political memorials but a deliberate nod to Ewhrudjakpo’s passion for sports development in the region.

Governor Douye Diri, flanked by his wife, Justice Patience Diri, national lawmakers, traditional leaders, and sports personalities, led the ceremony that brought together mourners from all walks of life.

Ewhrudjakpo’s sudden passing on December 11, 2025, after collapsing in office, had prompted a three-day state mourning and widespread condolences from national figures—including President Bola Tinubu, who described him as a selfless and committed public servant—and echoes of grief from both political allies and opponents alike.

Tributes at today’s event resonated with stories of his dedication to grassroots sports, mentorship of young leaders, and commitment to service—values that Bayelsa’s leaders say will outlive his physical presence.

As the state prepares for the final interment later this week, the tribute continues to underscore a legacy that transcends politics—a life marked by service, principle, and passion.
