Coup Tension Rises: ECOWAS Demands Immediate Release of Political Detainees in Guinea-Bissa

Fresh tension has gripped Guinea-Bissau as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strong demand for the immediate release of all political detainees following the country’s latest coup crisis.

In a firm statement, the regional bloc condemned the continued detention of political actors and warned that such actions threaten democracy, peace, and stability in Guinea-Bissau and the wider West African region. ECOWAS stressed that political repression in the aftermath of a coup only deepens mistrust and fuels unrest.

The body further called on the authorities to respect human rights, uphold constitutional order, and create room for inclusive dialogue aimed at restoring democratic governance. According to ECOWAS, the release of detainees is a critical first step toward easing tensions and rebuilding public confidence.

As regional leaders closely monitor developments, the demand from ECOWAS sends a clear message: the era of silence over unlawful detentions is over, and Guinea-Bissau must take urgent steps to return to the path of democracy and rule of law.
