The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group called ‘Lukarawas’ in the North-western region of Nigeria. Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed this during a briefing on military operations in Abuja on Thursday. He explained that the group originated in the Republic of Niger following the recent coup, which disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.
The terrorists infiltrated northern Sokoto and Kebbi states from Niger and Mali, taking advantage of weakened security cooperation after the coup. Buba noted that local communities initially welcomed the group, believing they had good intentions, but the movement was not reported to security agencies.
Despite challenges, Buba assured that military efforts, including Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), continue to target the group. He added that while the group operates in remote areas, troops are working to locate and eliminate them. The Nigerian Police Force in Sokoto has also confirmed the group’s presence in five local government areas, including Gudu, Tangaza, Binji, Illela, and another area, where they are imposing their ideology on the locals.
