Drug war: 10.6m Nigerians hooked on drugs — Marwa

Nigeria’s battle against drug abuse has taken a troubling turn, as 10.6 million Nigerians have been confirmed to be dependent on drugs, according to the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.).

As reported by Punch Newspapers and Vanguard, Marwa disclosed the figure while highlighting the alarming scale of substance abuse across the country, describing it as a national emergency that cuts across age, class, and geography. He warned that drug addiction is no longer a fringe issue but a growing threat to public health, security, and productivity.

Channels Television reports that the NDLEA boss stressed the link between drug abuse and rising crime, mental health challenges, and social instability, calling for a collective response involving families, schools, religious institutions, and government agencies.

The revelation has sparked renewed conversations online and offline, with experts urging stronger prevention programs, rehabilitation support, and sustained enforcement as Nigeria intensifies its ongoing drug war.

With over 10 million lives reportedly affected, analysts say the figures underscore an urgent need for action before the crisis spirals further out of control.
