Federal High Court Grants Dele Farotimi ₦50M Bail

News

A Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti has granted human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi bail set at ₦50 million with a surety owning landed property. The case, involving allegations of criminal defamation against Aare Afe Babalola, is adjourned until January 29, 2025.

Farotimi, accused of defaming Babalola in his book on Nigeria’s justice system, was previously remanded in custody following his arrest. Activist Omoyele Sowore criticized the trial, calling it “farcical,” and urged the Ekiti Attorney-General to end the proceedings.

The Take It Back Movement plans protests in multiple locations despite police warnings against demonstrations. National Coordinator Juwon Sanyaolu condemned the police’s actions as illegal and vowed the protests would proceed.
