During the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan at the United Nations House in Abuja, the Federal Government announced a new initiative to address the nation’s humanitarian crisis. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwada, disclosed that N4 billion has been approved for conditional cash transfers to at least 10 million displaced households, focusing on vulnerable groups like women, widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities.
This program, set to commence in February and continue through April, aims to alleviate the immediate needs of families affected by displacement, particularly in the Northeast. Additionally, the government has allocated N2 billion in interest-free loans for rural farmers to boost food production and self-sufficiency. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to combat poverty and provide relief to those in urgent need.
Professor Yilwada emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting internally displaced persons, returnees, and affected communities through extensive consultations and a collaborative approach involving humanitarian, developmental, and peacebuilding efforts.
