The Federal Government aims to generate and distribute at least 8,000 megawatts of electricity by the end of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first term in 2027. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this on Thursday during the sixth edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja.
Adelabu said the goal is realistic, highlighting a 40% improvement in power generation since the current administration took office. “The average daily power generated and distributed in the last quarter of 2025 was 5,700MW, up from 4,100MW in the third quarter of 2023,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria’s power generation only grew from 2,000MW in 1984 to 4,000MW by 2022. In contrast, the Tinubu-led government has added 1,700MW in less than two years, peaking at 5,800MW.
“If previous administrations had consistently added 1,000MW annually since 1999, Nigeria would now have over 30,000MW,” Adelabu stated.
He attributed the recent progress to President Tinubu’s support and expressed confidence that if the current growth continues, the 8,000MW target is within reach by 2027.
