Finnish authorities have announced that Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran agitator arrested for alleged terrorism-related activities, could face charges in May 2025. Ekpa, who claims to be the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was arrested alongside four others last week on suspicions of incitement to violence and terrorism financing.
The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Ekpa used social media to promote violence in Nigeria’s South-East, leading to attacks on civilians and authorities. Finnish police also revealed his alleged involvement in sit-at-home orders that caused significant economic losses in the region.
Ekpa remains in custody following a court order in Päijät-Häme, Finland, for public incitement to commit terrorism-related crimes. Investigations have linked his activities to coordinated attacks since 2021, with his social media platforms serving as tools for incitement and fundraising.
The Nigerian government has welcomed the arrest, viewing it as a critical step toward curbing IPOB’s influence and addressing insecurity in the South-East. Nigerian authorities, alongside Finnish officials, continue to monitor the legal proceedings closely.
