Activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi revealed on Sunday that he is still facing four civil suits across different states, all filed by members of the Aare Afe Babalola law office. This disclosure came during the Toyin Falola Interviews, despite the withdrawal of criminal cases against him by legal luminary Afe Babalola (SAN).
Farotimi was previously arrested and tried for alleged criminal defamation and cyberbullying after Babalola petitioned the police over claims in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. However, Babalola later withdrew his petition following interventions from traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
While the criminal charges have been dropped, Farotimi emphasized that the legal battle continues through civil suits. He defended his book as a well-researched critique of systemic corruption in Nigeria’s judiciary, stating, “This is not a trial of Dele Farotimi… it is a trial of the legal system.”
He criticized those dismissing his work without reading it, arguing that Nigeria’s legal framework punishes truth while rewarding deception. “I am being sued not because I have lied, but because I have dared to speak the truth,” he asserted.
