In a dramatic turn of events at the heart of Yoruba land, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been given a legal green-light to proceed with its much-anticipated national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan. That’s according to a ruling delivered by the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan, under the watch of Justice A. L. Akintola.
The case emerged from an ex parte application filed by Mr. Folahan Malamo Adelabi — an aspirant for the position of Deputy National Organising Secretary of the party — via Suit No. I/1336/2025. He asked the court to restrain the party’s leadership from truncating or disrupting the approved timetable, guidelines and schedule for the convention.
In his verdict, Justice Akintola declared that the applicant had successfully shown that urgent intervention was needed. The court accordingly issued an interim injunction — restraining the party and its leadership from interfering with the convention timetable, and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to attend, monitor and observe the national convention in accordance with electoral laws.
Notably, the court’s decision comes just days after a different ruling — by the Federal High Court in Abuja — which had restrained the PDP from holding its convention on the grounds that it had not complied with its own constitution and other legal requirements.
According to the Oyo court’s order, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), National Executive Committee (NEC), and the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) must “honour the provision of the … Guidelines, Timetable and Schedule Activities” pending the motion on notice. The court also mandated that INEC, as fourth defendant, must deploy its personnel to monitor and observe the convention slated for Ibadan.
The ruling therefore sets the stage for over 3,000 delegates — including governors, National Assembly members, statutory delegates from all 36 states and the FCT — to converge in Ibadan for what promises to be a high-stakes, high-profile party event.
As the PDP leadership now accelerates final preparations for the convention, all eyes will be on how INEC carries out its monitoring role, and how the party handles internal divisions in the lead-up to the event.
