Insecurity Deepens: Senate Deputy Leader Presses Federal, State Governments on Weak Border Control

As Nigeria continues to battle rising insecurity across several regions, the Deputy Leader of the Senate has issued a stern warning to all levels of government, calling for urgent and coordinated action on the country’s porous borders.

Speaking amid growing public concern, the lawmaker described weak border surveillance as a major gateway for arms smuggling, banditry, and cross-border crimes, stressing that no meaningful security reform can succeed without tightening border control.

According to reports by our correspondent, the Senate Deputy Leader urged security agencies to move beyond rhetoric and embrace intelligence-driven strategies, advanced technology, and stronger collaboration with neighboring countries. He also challenged state governments to stop treating border security as a federal-only responsibility, noting that insecurity thrives where accountability is shared but action is absent.

The renewed call comes as Nigerians demand more decisive leadership in tackling insecurity that has disrupted economic activities, displaced communities, and heightened fear nationwide. Analysts warn that without urgent border reforms, efforts to restore peace may remain largely ineffective.
