The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has renewed its challenge to the basis of its 2017 proscription, asking the Nigerian authorities to produce evidence of terrorism that led to the group being labelled a terrorist organisation.

In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB questioned the events between its August 30, 2017 meeting with South-East governors and the subsequent military operation and proscription in September.

IPOB said the sequence of events raised questions about the justification for the proscription and urged Nigerians to examine the records surrounding the 2017 events. However, the Court of Appeal affirmed IPOB’s proscription in January 2025, ruling that the Federal Government acted lawfully.
