Lagos begins probe after four-storey building housing school collapses in Ogba

Authorities in Lagos have launched an investigation after a four-storey building reportedly housing a school collapsed in Ogba, sparking panic among residents and raising fresh concerns about building safety in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

According to reports by Punch Newspapers and Vanguard Newspapers, the incident occurred earlier in the day, prompting an immediate response from emergency agencies and local authorities.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were quickly deployed to the scene to begin rescue and assessment operations while residents gathered around the rubble in shock.

Authorities say the collapsed structure reportedly housed a school and other facilities, raising fears that several people could have been trapped when the building came down.

In a statement, the Lagos State Government confirmed that a full investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the collapse and whether structural violations or substandard materials played a role.

Urban development experts quoted by The Guardian Nigeria noted that repeated cases of building collapse in Lagos have often been linked to poor supervision, illegal construction, and failure to follow approved building standards.

Emergency responders continued search and rescue efforts while officials assured the public that anyone found responsible for negligence would face the full weight of the law.

The latest collapse has once again reignited debates over building regulations and enforcement in Lagos, a rapidly growing megacity where safety experts say stricter monitoring of construction projects remains urgently needed.
