The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has raised alarms about the escalating crisis of baby factories and the buying and selling of children across Nigeria.
The Director-General of NAPTIP, Fatima Waziri–Azi, who voiced her concerns over the disturbing trend, cited recent incidents with severity of the issue, with reports detailing how vulnerable young girls are exploited in these illegal operations.
According to her, these baby factories lure victims with deceptive promises of financial gain or support, only to trap them in a cycle of exploitation where men are recruited to impregnate them, and the resulting babies are sold.
Prof. Waziri–Azi called on parents to protect their children from falling prey to such schemes and encouraged communities to actively report suspicious activities through the toll-free number, 0703 0000 203, or the short code 627 (available on MTN and Airtel networks).
