January 15 marks the Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD), an annual event honoring the sacrifices of Nigerian Armed Forces members, both veterans and those who paid the ultimate price. The day also commemorates veterans of the World Wars and the Nigerian Civil War, celebrating their courage in securing peace and justice for the nation.

While AFRD includes symbolic ceremonies and parades, it serves as a reminder of the price paid for Nigeria’s sovereignty. It also highlights the struggles faced by the families of fallen soldiers, many of whom face financial and educational hardships after losing their breadwinners.
