The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched an inter-ministerial committee to enforce the nationwide ban on single-use plastics, signaling a bold step toward environmental protection and public health.
The inauguration took place in Abuja, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who was represented by Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma.
According to OSGF spokesman Segun Imohiosen, the ban covers PET bottles, styrofoam, plastic bags, sachet water, and straws, all notorious contributors to plastic pollution. The move aims to reduce plastic waste, protect ecosystems and marine life, and promote a healthier environment for Nigerians.
“This is a crucial step in safeguarding our environment and ensuring the health of our citizens,” Imohiosen said, citing recent approval from the Federal Executive Council in June 2024.
Environmental experts and activists have welcomed the initiative, highlighting that proper enforcement of the ban could significantly curb plastic pollution, improve waste management, and align Nigeria with global sustainability efforts.
With the committee now in place, the government is set to coordinate across ministries, agencies, and local authorities to ensure compliance and raise public awareness about the dangers of single-use plastics.
