Shell Petroleum confirmed an oil spill at Ogale, near Port Harcourt, on Monday, after a saver pit overflowed during flushing operations. The company stated that its spill response team contained the overflow and notified authorities.
A joint investigation led by regulators is being arranged to assess the cause and impact, Shell said in a statement.
The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) attributed the spill to crude overflowing from an underground pit into a pipeline linked to the Ogoni cleanup project.
Oil spills have long plagued Nigeria’s Niger Delta, causing severe environmental damage, loss of livelihoods, and health risks for millions in affected communities.
