Ooni Donates ₦100m, Hilux to Sunday Igboho’s Security Outfit
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has thrown his weight behind the Iru Ekun Security Network, a community-based security outfit established by Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, with a donation of ₦100 million and a brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicle.
The donation was announced following a courtesy visit by Igboho and members of the Iru Ekun Security Network to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, where the monarch reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening grassroots security across Yorubaland.
According to a statement from the Ooni’s palace, the revered monarch described security as the foundation of sustainable development, stressing that protecting lives and property should transcend political, religious and ideological differences. He also commended Sunday Igboho for what he described as a bold initiative to complement existing efforts in tackling insecurity.
The Ooni further called on traditional rulers, business leaders, professionals and other prominent Yoruba stakeholders to support the security outfit, saying collective action is needed to address the region’s security challenges.
Reacting to the gesture, Sunday Igboho expressed gratitude to the monarch, describing him as a father figure to the Yoruba people. He said the visit was also an opportunity to brief the Ooni on the activities of the Iru Ekun Security Network while seeking his continued guidance and royal blessings.
The development comes months after Igboho disclosed that the Iru Ekun Security Network had begun operations across forests in the South-West and was awaiting full regulatory backing, amid renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of the region.
The donation has attracted widespread attention, with several media organisations, including Nigerian Tribune, Blueprint, The Point and Politics Nigeria, reporting that the Ooni’s support marks one of the most significant endorsements the security outfit has received since its establishment.
