The political landscape in Rivers State was jolted on Tuesday as six members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), deepening the crisis rocking the opposition party.
The lawmakers announced their defection in separate letters read on the floor of the House, citing internal divisions, leadership disputes, and irreconcilable differences within the PDP as reasons for their decision.
According to reports by Channels Television , the defections are linked to the prolonged political standoff in Rivers State, which has continued to polarise party structures and weaken PDP’s grip on the state at the national level.
The Punch reports that APC leaders have welcomed the lawmakers, describing the move as evidence of the ruling party’s growing influence in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts say the development could significantly alter legislative alignments in the National Assembly and further intensify the battle for control of Rivers State politics, long regarded as a PDP stronghold.
As the dust settles, all eyes remain on the PDP leadership and the Rivers political bloc, with observers warning that more defections may follow if the internal rift persists.
