The Sokoto State Government has raised serious concerns over faulty runway lighting at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, warning that the situation poses a significant risk to flight operations, especially during night landings.
According to reports by Daily Trust and Channels Television, the state government called on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to urgently intervene and fix the defective lighting system.
Officials noted that the malfunctioning runway lights have already begun to disrupt flight schedules, with some airlines reportedly avoiding night operations into Sokoto due to safety concerns. The government emphasized that the airport is a critical gateway for economic and social activities in the state, making the issue one of urgent public interest.
Citing safety standards in the aviation sector, the state authorities stressed that proper runway illumination is essential for safe takeoff and landing, particularly in low visibility conditions.
As reported by multiple media outlets, the government urged swift action from relevant federal agencies to prevent potential hazards and ensure uninterrupted flight operations at the airport.
