Taraba Govt Rejects ₦1.2trn Debt Claim, Says Figure Is Misleading

The Taraba State Government has pushed back against claims that the state’s debt profile has ballooned to a staggering ₦1.2 trillion, dismissing the figure as inaccurate.

The controversy followed allegations by former federal lawmaker Danjuma Shiddi, who claimed that Taraba’s debt had risen significantly under the current administration.

However, a financial analyst, Olayinka Gabriel, described the ₦1.2 trillion figure as misleading and inaccurate, urging the public to disregard the claim. National Accord reported the analyst’s position in October 2025.

The dispute has reignited conversations around Taraba’s borrowing, federal allocations and the transparency of the state’s finances, with questions now being raised over how the conflicting figures were arrived at.

As the controversy continues, the key issue remains: What is Taraba State’s actual debt profile?
