Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has announced that President Yoweri Museveni will contest the 2026 elections, aiming to extend his nearly 40-year rule. The 80-year-old leader, who has amended the constitution to allow multiple terms, faces mounting criticism for stifling opposition voices.
The NRM confirmed Museveni’s bid as party chairman and presidential flag bearer, with the party’s electoral commission chair, Tanga Odoi, stating the president will officially declare his candidacy soon. This comes as key rivals like Bobi Wine—who lost the 2021 election marred by violence and irregularities—also vow to challenge Museveni.
Other opposition figures, including Kizza Besigye, face severe repression, with Besigye charged with treason and facing the death penalty. Rights groups have condemned the clampdown, describing it as politically motivated.
