A lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Dr. Fabian Osita, was shot dead on Monday night by suspected car-snatchers near the high-tension area in Aroma, Anambra State.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. as the assailants reportedly double-crossed Osita while he was driving home in his Toyota Corolla. He was shot in the head after attempting to resist, and the attackers fled with his vehicle, leaving his body behind.
The Chief Security Officer of UNIZIK, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the incident, noting that it has plunged the university community into mourning. Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at UNIZIK are planning to visit the Government House to protest rising insecurity in the state.
The Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed the murder and launched an investigation. The police have urged eyewitnesses and the public to provide information to aid the search for the perpetrators and the missing vehicle, described as a 2006 Ash Toyota Corolla with Enugu plate number.
Residents have expressed growing concerns about insecurity in Awka, particularly during the Yuletide season, urging vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
