Val Kilmer, the prolific American actor known for his roles in Top Gun, The Doors, and Batman Forever, has died at 65, The New York Times reported Tuesday. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed pneumonia as the cause of death. He had previously battled throat cancer, following a diagnosis in 2014, but later recovered.
Kilmer’s career spanned decades, from his breakout role in Top Secret! (1984) to his iconic portrayal of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun (1986). He later starred as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors and played Batman in Batman Forever. A versatile performer, he worked on both blockbusters and independent films.
Despite a reputation for being difficult on set, Kilmer was praised for his dedication to his craft. His later years were marked by health struggles, which were explored in the 2021 documentary Val. He made a poignant return to the screen in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where his real-life condition was incorporated into his character.
Kilmer, who once called his life “magical,” is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack.
