Ooni of Ife Calls for Peace Ahead of Osun Governorship Poll, Urges Politicians to Shun Violence
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has appealed to political stakeholders, candidates, and supporters to embrace peace and conduct themselves responsibly ahead of the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
The revered traditional ruler stressed that elections should be seen as a democratic exercise and not a battlefield, urging politicians to place the interest of the people above personal ambition. He also called on youths to resist being used as tools for violence before, during, and after the polls.
The monarch’s appeal comes amid growing political activities and heightened campaigns across Osun State, with security agencies intensifying efforts to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
According to The Punch, prominent traditional rulers and religious leaders across Nigeria have continued to advocate for violence-free elections, warning that political unrest threatens democratic stability and economic development. The newspaper reported that stakeholders have consistently urged political actors to pursue their ambitions within the confines of the law.
Similarly, Channels Television reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies have repeatedly assured residents of adequate preparations to guarantee a credible, free, and fair election, while cautioning political parties against vote-buying, intimidation, and other electoral offences.
Premium Times also noted that civil society organisations and election observers have intensified voter education campaigns across Osun, encouraging citizens to participate peacefully and reject all forms of electoral violence.
The Ooni reaffirmed that peace remains the foundation for development, urging all contestants to accept the outcome of a free and credible election and to work together for the continued growth and prosperity of Osun State, regardless of political differences.
