Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe, a suspended Catholic priest from the Diocese of Warri, has renounced his celibacy vows and priestly calling to marry his partner, Dora Chichah, in Dallas, USA.
The wedding, held at the Stream of Joy Church on December 29, 2024, occurred without his release from canonical obligations, prompting the Diocese to issue a suspension in line with Canon 1394 S1. Bishop Anthony Ovayero Ewherido decreed the suspension on January 16, 2025, barring him from priestly duties.
Family sources revealed Fr. Oghenerukevwe struggled with loneliness and mental health issues, which influenced his decision. His sister, Mary Okanatotor, defended his choice, describing it as “the best decision for him” amidst personal challenges.
The Diocese noted the priest had initiated a request to leave Holy Orders in November 2024 but married before completing the formal process. It emphasized that all canonical implications of his suspension are effective immediately, though he retains the right to seek reconciliation.
The case has sparked widespread reactions, with many expressing sympathy and calling for understanding.
