Israel on Wednesday marked 1,000 days since the October 7, 2023 attacks, with solemn memorial ceremonies across the country even as fresh protests erupted over the government’s handling of the ongoing conflict and efforts to secure the release of remaining hostages.
According to Reuters, families of victims, survivors, and government officials gathered to honor those killed during the Hamas-led attack that triggered the war in Gaza. Across several cities, candles were lit and moments of silence observed in remembrance of the lives lost.
At the same time, BBC News and The Associated Press (AP) reported that thousands of demonstrators returned to the streets, demanding stronger action to bring home the remaining hostages and calling for greater accountability from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
The milestone comes as the conflict continues to shape life in Israel and Gaza, with international efforts to broker a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement still ongoing.
The 1,000-day mark has become both a day of mourning and a renewed call for answers, highlighting the deep divisions and emotional toll the war continues to have on Israeli society.
