Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Americans want him to run for a third term, a move prohibited by the U.S. Constitution.
“People are asking me to run,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the possibility. He added, “I don’t know. I never looked into it. They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that, but I have not looked into it.”
When questioned about a hypothetical rematch against former President Barack Obama, Trump responded, “That would be a good one, I’d like that.”
Speaking to NBC News on Sunday, Trump insisted, “I’m not joking” about the idea of seeking a third term.
The 78-year-old Republican, who served from 2017 to 2021, began his second term on January 20. The U.S. Constitution, through the 22nd Amendment ratified in 1951, restricts presidents to two terms, formalizing a tradition set by George Washington in 1797.
