Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed on Easter Monday. The pontiff passed away peacefully at 7:35 a.m. at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.
The Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, formally announced the death, stating, “With deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis… At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, had long battled recurring respiratory issues. He was recently discharged from Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital after a 38-day stay for bronchitis and pneumonia, returning to the Vatican to recover.
Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis appeared on Sunday to greet the faithful during Easter Mass. His death comes less than 24 hours later.
In preparation for his passing, Pope Francis approved a revised edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, the liturgical guide for papal funerals. His wishes emphasized a simplified rite focused on faith and humility.
