An Ekiti State Chief Magistrates Court has struck out the defamation suit filed against human rights activist Dele Farotimi by the Police. The suit was withdrawn at the request of the prosecutor, Martins Akala, following instructions from the Police authorities.
This follows a similar outcome in January 2025, when a Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti struck out cyberbullying and defamation charges against Farotimi. The charges stemmed from allegations in Farotimi’s book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’, in which he accused Afe Babalola of corruption involving Supreme Court justices.
Following mediation by prominent traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Babalola agreed to withdraw the defamation cases against Farotimi. Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled that the case be struck out after the prosecution’s application and with no objections from Farotimi’s counsel.
