The Federal Government has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (bird flu) in Kano State, affecting birds such as layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys.
A circular issued by Dr. Taiwo Olasoju on behalf of Nigeria’s Chief Veterinary Officer warned of the disease’s potential spread, urging heightened surveillance, biosecurity measures, and public awareness.
Dr. Usman Gwarzo, Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) Kano chapter, revealed that the virus was first detected in a flock in Gwale LGA in December 2024 after a duck bought at Janguza market infected other birds. Tests confirmed avian influenza in January 2025.
No cases have been reported in commercial farms, but efforts are underway to raise awareness among poultry farmers and traders to contain the outbreak.
