PARIS — French authorities say nearly 900 people were arrested following widespread unrest that erupted after Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph over the weekend.
According to France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nunez, more than 890 arrests were made across the country as celebrations descended into violence in several cities, particularly in Paris. The minister also disclosed that nearly 180 law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the clashes.
Reports indicate that what began as jubilant celebrations quickly escalated into riots, with incidents of vandalism, looting, and vehicles set ablaze. Police were deployed in large numbers to restore order as disturbances spread through parts of the French capital and other major cities.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence while hosting the PSG squad at the Élysée Palace on Sunday, describing the scenes as “unspeakable” and insisting that such actions have no place in sport.
Several international news outlets, including Reuters, The Guardian, Sky Sports, and Al Jazeera, reported that thousands of supporters flooded the streets following PSG’s victory, with security forces making hundreds of arrests amid clashes, property damage, and public disorder.
Authorities have launched investigations into multiple incidents linked to the unrest, including reports of injuries, stabbings, and a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred during the celebrations.
The latest disturbances have reignited concerns about crowd control and public safety during major sporting events in France, especially following similar scenes witnessed after previous PSG victories.
