Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed concerns over possible impeachment following Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, which recognized the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers and ordered the federal government to withhold the state’s financial allocations until the governor presents the budget to them.
The apex court also nullified the 2024 local government elections conducted under Fubara, shifting the balance of power in the ongoing political crisis between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Despite the ruling, Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, asserted that Fubara remains unshaken and will respect the law while awaiting the Certified True Copy of the judgment to determine the next steps.
Meanwhile, the Rivers Elders Forum urged Fubara not to seek reconciliation with Wike and his allies. In response to the court’s decision, the governor ordered the 23 local government chairmen to hand over to their respective Heads of Local Government Administration by Monday, pending fresh elections.
Fubara, in a statewide broadcast, reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the law despite his administration’s disagreement with the ruling.
