Ijaw, Urhobo Stakeholders Urge INEC to Fast-Track Warri Constituency Delineation

Stakeholders from the Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic nationalities have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently implement the long-awaited delineation of constituencies in the Warri area of Delta State.

According to reports cited by several national media outlets including Vanguard, Punch, and Channels Television, the groups made the demand in a joint letter addressed to INEC, insisting that the commission must act swiftly to correct what they described as longstanding electoral imbalances in the region.

The stakeholders argued that the delayed implementation of the delineation exercise has continued to fuel tension and political suspicion among communities in Warri South, Warri North, and Warri South-West local government areas. They maintained that a fair and transparent boundary adjustment is necessary to ensure equity and peaceful coexistence ahead of future elections.

They further urged INEC to avoid any action that could be interpreted as bias, stressing that the credibility of the commission is at stake if the matter is not handled decisively.

The Warri delineation issue has remained a recurring source of political debate in Delta State, with community leaders and civil society groups repeatedly calling for clarity on electoral boundaries to prevent further disputes.

INEC is yet to issue an official response to the latest demand, but observers say the pressure from both ethnic blocs could force the commission to revisit the matter in the coming weeks as political activities begin to build up ahead of future polls.
