The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State Chapter, has denied claims that the suspect accused of killing an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer in Awka is a medical doctor.
In a statement issued Monday by the NMA State Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, the association clarified that the suspect, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, is neither a licensed doctor nor a member of the NMA.
The statement addressed widespread media reports that erroneously identified Ikechukwu, allegedly involved in medical supplies, as a medical professional and staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). However, both the NMA and NAUTH debunked these claims, confirming that Ikechukwu is not affiliated with the hospital or the medical profession.
The NMA expressed concern over the misuse of the title “medical doctor” by impostors, emphasizing that such practices harm the reputation of the medical field.
The association called for an immediate retraction of reports labeling the suspect as a doctor and urged media outlets to verify information before publication.
While extending condolences to the EFCC and the bereaved family, the NMA reaffirmed the integrity and law-abiding nature of the medical profession in Nigeria.
