Over 2.2 Million Candidates Set to Sit for UTME 2026 Across Nigeria

More than 2.2 million candidates are set to participate in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), marking one of the highest registration figures in recent years, according to multiple reports from national news outlets.

Citing updates from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), platforms like Punch and Vanguard report that the massive turnout reflects a continued surge in demand for tertiary education across Nigeria.

Officials say preparations are already in top gear to ensure a smooth and credible examination process, with increased monitoring, improved computer-based testing systems, and tighter security measures to curb malpractice.

According to Daily Trust, JAMB authorities have also emphasized the importance of early preparation, urging candidates to familiarize themselves with exam procedures and guidelines ahead of the exercise.

Education stakeholders, as reported by The Guardian Nigeria, have described the figure as both encouraging and concerning—highlighting the growing interest in higher education while also pointing to the limited number of available university spaces.

With the exam date drawing closer, millions of candidates across the country are now gearing up for what remains one of the most competitive academic assessments in Nigeria.
