Six men, including Juventus and France midfielder Paul Pogba’s brother Mathias and three childhood friends, went on trial Tuesday in Paris, accused of blackmail, attempted extortion of €13 million, and holding the football star at gunpoint.
The case has shocked the football world, revealing a web of betrayal and alleged criminal acts. Pogba claims he was kidnapped in March 2022 by hooded men armed with assault rifles, who demanded millions for “services rendered.” He said the perpetrators also pressured him at training facilities and homes in France, England, and Italy.
Mathias Pogba first brought the case to public attention in August 2022 through a video promising explosive revelations about his younger brother. He later accused Paul of using witchcraft against fellow France star Kylian Mbappé, allegations Paul dismissed as part of the extortion scheme.
While Mathias is charged with attempted extortion, the other five face charges of extortion, kidnapping, and forming a criminal gang. The accused deny the allegations, claiming they had friendly ties with Pogba and were also victims of the armed men.
The trial comes as Paul Pogba faces professional challenges, including Juventus canceling his contract after his suspension for doping until March 2025.
