The Trump administration is considering a proposal to shut down nearly 30 U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, according to a leaked internal State Department document obtained by CNN. The plan, part of a broader cost-cutting initiative, includes closures in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Embassies in the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Lesotho, and South Sudan are among those listed, along with a consulate in South Africa. The proposed closures also affect diplomatic missions in Malta, Luxembourg, and several locations in France, Germany, and the UK.
The move is reportedly driven by the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency, which seeks to slash federal spending and reduce U.S. diplomatic presence abroad. The document also recommends scaling back operations in Somalia and Iraq, countries pivotal to America’s counterterrorism strategy.
There is no official confirmation yet on whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the proposal, and the State Department has declined to comment on the leak.
