The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for corps members to N77,000, effective July 2024. This decision, announced by NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, follows the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, as confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission. Previously, corps members received N33,000 after the minimum wage was raised to N30,000 in 2019.
President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Bill into law on July 29, 2024, setting the minimum wage at N70,000. The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had advocated for better welfare packages during a visit to the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta. Expressing gratitude, he noted, “The NYSC boss is thankful to the Federal Government for the timely gesture and is optimistic that it will not only bring much-needed succour to the corps members but also boost their morale.” This increase aims to enhance the living conditions of corps members and motivate them in their service to the nation.
