Prominent economist and political activist Prof. Pat Utomi has inaugurated a shadow government, dubbed the Big Tent Coalition Shadow Government, made up of members from various opposition parties. Launched virtually on Monday, the group aims to present policy alternatives, monitor the Tinubu administration, and serve as a credible opposition force.
Utomi said the shadow cabinet was formed in response to growing poverty, insecurity, and economic mismanagement, accusing the government of using propaganda to silence dissent. The shadow cabinet will hold weekly meetings to evaluate federal policies and propose reforms in areas such as the economy, security, healthcare, education, and governance ethics.
The Federal Government swiftly condemned the move. Minister of Information Mohammed Idris called it an “aberration,” noting that Nigeria’s presidential system has no constitutional provision for a shadow government and urging the opposition to work through the National Assembly.
Utomi defended the initiative as necessary to rescue Nigeria from deepening crises, urging the cabinet to develop practical solutions, including decentralised policing and support for local entrepreneurship. Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi was named head of the Good Governance portfolio, with several other notable figures also appointed.
